Monastic medieval gardens were inspired by biblical imagery. Their beauty was a projection of paradise, intended to remind the devoted of the reward awaiting them for a life of good works and prayer. In 1995, two architects and a master gardener set about re-crating paradise on earth at the twelfth-century Prieuré d'Orsan in rural Berry, the mysterious pays south of the city of Bourges, where folklore inspired the novels of George Sand and superstition pervades.
